June 2008
Dear Students and Parents,
We have just celebrated 1,000,000
volunteer hours served in the Bethlehem Area School District’s
Community Service Program. Over the past 17 years, our high school students
have been giving back to the community by volunteering in
many different non-profit agencies. The District’s
guidelines for the volunteer service program have been updated
and several changes are now in effect. It is your responsibility
to make sure you are familiar with the current policy and
that your volunteer activities follow the Community Service
Activities Guidelines.
Recent Changes
- April 15th of the student’s senior year is the last date
Community Service hours can be submitted for approval to
meet the 60 hour graduation requirement or to be considered
toward the 135 hours required for the attainment of the
Silver Cord.
- Students not meeting the April 15th deadline must petition
the Superintendent of Schools for an extension.
- It is strongly recommended to complete
at least 15 hours of community service each year. Certain
privileges may be tied to meeting a minimum yearly requirement,
i.e. senior lunch privilege.
- If you choose to volunteer at an
organization not on the list, the organization must be
a non-profit, a governmental agency, an institution of
higher education, a local school, or police department. These projects must receive
approval before service begins. All agency documentation
must be provided.
- Volunteer activities may not support partisan political
organizations, religious instruction, or proselytizing.
- A Parental Waiver is required for any agency* that
may serve alcohol at any event.
